Carmel-based Lewis Builders’ Rebuild of 1960s House by Renowned Architect Takes His Design Esthetics Into 21st Century

Joseph Eichler was a renowned architect in the 1950s and ‘60s who was known for his clean, open, mid-century modern designs.

Carmel, CA, April 29, 2019 — Joseph Eichler was a renowned architect in the 1950s and ‘60s who was known for his clean, open, mid-century modern designs. But even an architect whose work was ahead of his time could use an update in the 21st century.

That was the design-and-rebuild challenge for designer-builder John Lewis of Lewis Builders in Carmel, California. He wanted to keep the design esthetics of Eichler, but update the look, feel and functioning of an Eichler-designed home from the 1960s perched on a hillside in Carmel with views of the ocean.

The challenges were many: the heating and ventilation system was poured into the concrete slab foundation and had pest intrusion. The floor plan was choppy — you had to walk through one bedroom to get to the other. The kitchen was crowded — you couldn’t see from the kitchen to the dining room nor to the ocean. Parts of the house were starved for natural light.

In addition, a crowded kitchen, a misplaced fireplace wall, and overgrown vegetation outside all hindered ocean views from this 1,600-square-foot house located a block and a half from the beach. An old patio arbor blocked natural light and felt crowded.

The challenge was to rebuild the house into a modern, well-equipped and well-lighted home yet still keep as much of Eichler’s design esthetic as possible.

“We pride ourselves on being able to accomplish any kind of architectural design, Victorian, Contemporary, Carmel Cottage, Craftsman, and so on,” said Lewis. “With this house, we wanted to pay homage to Eichler and do something he would do in 2020. He was pretty modern for his time, so we call this an ‘updated’ Eichler.”

Lewis and his team added a hallway, along with a slight bump out to the back that made three bedrooms out of two. Kitchen, living, dining, and foyer were all opened up with windows and skylights to bring the outdoors in.

Some of the solutions included:

•Original heating, and ventilation, system was removed and radiant floor heating installed.

•A hallway was added to make three bedrooms.

•Kitchen, dining and living room were opened up.

•Fireplace was moved, energy efficient windows installed, landscaping rejuvenated, all to maximize ocean views.

•Natural light was optimized in true Eichler style to bring the outdoors in with six skylights, four patio doors, two French doors, and glass transoms on both interior and exterior walls.

•An operable skylight above the shower, including a glass transom, to bring both light and fresh air into the interior master bath.

•Trimless interior windows and doors to enhance the clean, geometric lines, especially prominent in the glass hallway.

•7.5-inch wide plank European oak hardwood floors

•Natural stacked stone walls flank kitchen walls, fireplace wall, and accented throughout

•Waterfall countertops and TV console in Calcutta quartz

•Caesarstone in raw concrete quartz countertops

•Appliances from Bosch, Bertazzoni, and Fisher & Paykel

•Custom cabinetry

•Radiant floor heating

•Curbless showers

•Six oversized skylights (one operable above the Master shower), four patio doors, two French doors

•Two outdoor living spaces totaling more than 800 square feet

“We wanted to use clean, simple lines and natural elements such as wood and to add a warmth and softness to the space,” said Lewis, who calls the design “organic contemporary.” “We honored Eichler’s design by keeping some of the main esthetics in place.

Lewis said he learned a lot about Eichler’s design sensibilities by working on the house.

“As a student of design, I’m immediately attracted to these types of homes,” he said. “I would do anything to learn from the masters like Eichler. So this was a close, intimate experience to work with this house and its design. It was enhanced with modern conveniences, while being true to Eichler’s Mid-Century Modern design elements. We believe Eichler would be pleased.”

Monterey Symphony’s 2018-2019 Season, ‘Sound Waves,’ Concludes in May with Sixth Concert, Special Event Luncheon and Gala By The Bay Benefit

Monterey Symphony’s 2018-19 Season, “Sound Waves,” concludes in 2019 with concerts on May 18-19

Monterey, CA, April 24, 2019 — Monterey Symphony’s 2018-19 Season, “Sound Waves,” concludes in 2019 with concerts on May 18-19, the annual Gala By The Bay benefit on May 3, and the final special event luncheon on May 16.

The sixth and final concert of the season, “Sound Waves,” will be held the weekend of May 18-19, at the Sunset Center in Carmel.

Gala By The Bay will be held from 6-10 p.m. Friday, May 3, 2019, at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and the May Luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. May 16, 2019, MPCC Beach House, 3000 Club Road, in Pebble Beach.

The final concert of the season will conclude in grand fashion with music by Wagner, Chopin, and Beethoven. Richard Wagner composed many brilliant overtures throughout his many German operas, including the overture from “The Flying Dutchman,” featured as the opening work in the season finale. Chopin's stunning Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 21, follows, with magnificent Cuban pianist Marcos Madrigal performing the popular work, composed before Chopin completed his formal education at age 20.

The season ends with one of the greatest compositions for the concert hall of all time: Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, Op. 67. A favorite among experienced and new audiences, musicians and conductors, the fifth endeavor in the symphony genre struck a chord for Beethoven, as he discovered his true forte — it is the "Stairway to Heaven" of classical music.

The final concert of the 2018-19 season will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 18, and 3 p.m. Sunday, May 19 at the Sunset Center in Carmel and conducted by Symphony Music Director Max Bragado-Darman.

The lineup of special events concludes with the Gala By The Bay on May 3, at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and a final luncheon on May 16.

Salinas, CA, April 21, 2019 — All branches of the Central Coast YMCA will celebrate Healthy Kids’ Day, the Y’s national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids and families, on Saturday, April 27, 2019.

For over 25 years, YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day has celebrated kids’ health and continues to teach healthy habits for kids and families, encourage active play and inspire a lifetime love of physical activity.

YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day will include fun active play and educational activities to keep kids moving and learning, in order to maintain healthy habits and academic skills to achieve goals and reach their full potential.

Schipper Design celebrates its 15th anniversary and its Executive Vice President has been named a partner in the agency. Beth Welch, who has been with Schipper Design for almost six years, is now the Managing Director.


When Kathy founded Schipper Design 15 years ago in San Benito County, a hop-skip from California’s Silicon Valley, she immediately applied her signature style to her work. Not content to simply design, Kathy quickly set to work attracting and hiring fresh and innovative designers, digital creatives and marketing experts to the firm, building a well-rounded team equipped for collaboration.

“We are bringing Beth on as a partner so we can continue to deliver high-quality design and branding and continue our path for growth in marketing and design,” said Schipper, who now leads 15 full-time employees in a 4,000 sq. ft. studio in the heart of historic San Juan Bautista. “Beth has been instrumental in the company growth over the past five years. She brought a high level of agency experience and organizational leadership to Schipper Design.”

“Although our growth has primarily been referrals,” she said. “We always welcome new clients, and we are strengthened by new projects with our current clients. We have a commitment to be on the cutting edge of design and technical trends so our clients can benefit from our expertise. This makes our investment in continuous training and education for the staff vitally important.”

Adding Welch as a partner gives Schipper more flexibility to concentrate on the ever present demand for creative design and innovative marketing at Schipper Design.

Schipper started her career as a publishing rep for a book company and also worked in journalism, publication design, and leadership before moving to the Central Coast and starting her own design firm.

Welch had 15 years of marketing agency experience before joining Schipper in 2013. A native of Santa Maria, California, Welch graduated from San Jose State University with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in marketing.

“It’s very exciting, it’s something Kathy and I have been working on for the last couple of years,” said Welch about her new position. “We took the time to consider how it would impact the staff and our clients. We wanted it to be a smooth transition and have a positive outcome.”

Welch said her focus will be on business operations, human resources, business development, and managing client services. Her goal is to keep the firm progressing without losing sight of its vision.

“The goal is to continue to grow and manage the business; keeping it strong and instilling a culture and dedication much in alignment with our values and the high expectations we have for the creative work we design,” she said. “Our goal is to continue to provide our clients with clear marketing strategies and smart design. Working with our clients is exciting and important to me.”

Welch lives in San Juan Bautista with her husband and their three children.

Wonderwall design and furnishings shop in Sand City hosts two fun-filled events in support of the arts

“That’s what people respond to, the authentic, the intuitive, the creative,” said Cristofalo, co-owner with his wife Carina of Wonderwall design and furnishings showroom in Sand City.

Toward that end, the couple will hold two upcoming events at Wonderwall honoring creativity and the arts within a community where they’ve raised four children.

On Friday, May 10, Wonderwall will hold an appreciation reception for Pacific Repertory Theater from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sip wine, savor small bites and shop for a cause as the Cristofalos given back 20 percent of all sales to the Carmel-based theater company.

On Thursday, May 23, Wonderwall will host an art opening for acclaimed Carmel Valley contemporary artist Patricia Qualls, Ph.D, who will debut several of her large-scale, high-impact paintings (on display through Sept. 15).

Qualls’ art is represented by an international collection in Switzerland, and national collections in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Phoenix, Dallas and other cities across the country. Her work is also part of the George Blair permanent collection at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento.

Qualls believes strongly in the freedom of expression, and believes that, by unblocking our internal restraints, we can begin to relinquish the creative comparisons and competition that limit our own expressions.

Qualls can often be found painting in her studio/gallery Patricia Qualls Contemporary Art in Carmel Valley, a beautiful 1,200-square-foot gallery with 15-foot ceilings and a half dozen skylights that bring sunshine to each of her high-impact, large-scale paintings.

There is great synergy between the artist and Wonderwall, blessed with a 3,000-square-foot space filled with antiques, art, furniture, furnishings, home décor and architectural elements. Every piece in the showroom has been unearthed by the Cristofalos, with an eye toward their uniqueness, originality and appeal.

“Wonderwall is a word I’ve always loved,” said Mark. “That’s what Wonderwall means to me, it’s a wall between the ordinary world and the extraordinary world. We try to build the extraordinary here that transcends the normal into a beautiful space.”

Carina believes our homes should be filled with things we love.

Each year the Museum partners with the prestigious Science Illustration Program at CSUMB Extended Education to present art in the service of science. One of the most prestigious programs of its kind in the nation, the Science Illustration Certificate at CSUMB prepares students who are sought after by renowned institutions and publications around the world.

Graduates’ work can be found at museums and science centers such as the Smithsonian Institution, New York’s American Museum of Natural History, California Science Center and the Los Angeles Museum of Natural History; in top science magazines such as National Geographic, Scientific American, American Scientist, Nature, Natural History and Audubon; at zoos, aquaria, and botanical gardens such as the National Zoo, Washington, D.C., the Monterey Bay Aquarium; Kew Botanical Gardens, U.K.; as well as U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and hundreds of equally respected organizations.

Los Angeles-based professional dancer Haley Jonae will hold a Contemporary Dance Master Class for the Carmel Academy of Performing Arts on May 17 at CAPA in Carmel.

Carmel, CA, April 08, 2019 — Los Angeles-based professional dancer Haley Jonae will hold a Contemporary Dance Master Class for the Carmel Academy of Performing Arts on May 17 at CAPA in Carmel.

The class will be held from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Friday, May 17, at CAPA, Mission Street and Eighth Avenue in Carmel. The class is for ages 10 and older and class fee is $20. There is no fee for CAPA company members.

Jonae grew up in Santa Cruz, and has competed from age 3 to 18. She has worked with many artists, including on Jennifer Lopez’s live performance on New Year’s Eve on NBC-TV and on music videos "Limitless" and the soon-to-be released “ Medicine.”

She did a U.S. tour with Lindsey Sterling, tours internationally with Sophia Carson (from Disney’s “Descendants”), and has been in several music videos, including hip-hop Artist Gashi, singer Luis Fonsi (“Despacito”), and YouTube influencer Montana Tucker, to name a few.

Jonae works regularly with L.A.’s top choreographers, including Tessandra Chavez, NappyTabs, Kyle Hanagami, Travis Wall and Phillip Chbeeb.

She has assisted at conventions such as 24/7 CoDance and Hollywood Dance Jams. She recently traveled to France to work with young dancers and also choreographs for several studios in California.

When she isn’t on the dance floor, she enjoys spending her time journaling, hiking, walking on the beach and keeping her creative flow at great heights. Jonae is currently working in L.A., auditioning and reaching for her dreams of dancing with the world’s best artists.

The Mental Health Awareness Banquet is aptly named as it is traditionally held during Mental Health Awareness month. Past events have included local speakers involved in mental health services, as well as consumers who recount their lived experience with recovery. The Banquet also honors the many volunteers of the agency and the annual Kristin Hart agency award winner, which is given to consumers who inspire leadership in others. This event is open to the community. However, typically, the many volunteers of the agency, their friends and family members, and many community leaders in the field mental health services supporting Interim’s work, attend this event.

Salinas, CA, April 06, 2019 — Natividad launches its popular weekly Farmers’ Market on Wednesday, May 15.

The California Certified Farmers' Market, run by Everyone’s Harvest, is held every Wednesday from May 15 throughOctoberfrom 11:00 am to 3:30 pm outside of Building 200, Outpatient Services, located at 1441 Constitution Blvd.

“The market is part of Natividad’s ongoing commitment to promoting wellness and healthy eating,” said Natividad Assistant Administrator Andrea Rosenberg. “We hope our community and Natividad’s staff and patientstake advantage of the opportunity to shop for fresh produce, foods and more at our weekly market.”

Natividad’s Farmers’ Market features fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables, many of which are certified organic, flowers, live plants, and unique gifts from small-scale family farmers and local independent businesses. Shoppers support local California growers and entrepreneurs in the Salinas community, Rosenberg said.

Vendors participating this year include Stackhouse Brothers, Rodriguez Ranch, Golden Flowers, Gallardo’s Organics, Mai Thai Cuisine, Mix of Flavors, Chava’s Corn, Fruitas Fresca Barajas, Perfect Crumb, The Bearded Bean, Castellano Organic Farm, Hummus Heaven, and Luke’s Mobile Massage.

The Farmers’ Market 2019 lineup also features regular cooking demos and tastings from local chefs, Everyone's Harvest team members and hospital staff members. Attendees of these demos enjoy a sample of the featured recipe and take home a recipe card. The first cooking demo is at noon on May 15 and features renowned Monterey Peninsula chef Brandon Miller. 1 lb. assorted zucchini
1/4 cup sliced natural almonds
1 tablespoons olive oil
2/3 cups Parmesan cheese, shaved
Salt and pepper to taste

1. Cut the ends off of zucchini and julienne using a Japanese mandolin or grater.
2. Warm oil in sauté pan with almonds. When almonds are lightly browned, add squash and remove from heat.
3. Toss the squash with almonds and oil, season with salt and pepper and place in serving dish.
4. Top with cheese and serve.

Castroville Celebrates the 60th Annual Artichoke Food & Wine Festival in June 2019 with Food, Live Music, Kids Zone, Chef Demos, and Beer, Wine and Spirits

In 1959, the Central Coast community gathered to celebrate the harvest of the iconic vegetable and the region that became known as the “Artichoke Center of the World.”

Castroville, CA, April 05 , 2019 — In 1959, the Central Coast community gathered to celebrate the harvest of the iconic vegetable and the region that became known as the “Artichoke Center of the World.”

In June of this year, festivalgoers will gather again, this time to celebrate the 60th anniversary of what is now known as the Castroville Artichoke Food & Wine Festival, set for June 1-2, 2019, at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center in Monterey.

The festival not only celebrates the artichoke with dozens of delicious artichoke dishes, a beer, wine and spirits garden, chef demos, live entertainment, a kids zone, field tours and more, but has also became a primary source of funding for local non-profit groups that depend upon a successful event for their viability.

Open and free to all for both days of the Festival, Wild Science! by Imagination Gallery is hands-on fun with captivating STEM/STEAM displays and activities, for kids 1-101. Kids can take an excursion into the wild and amazing world of science through a plethora of interactive, fun, and visually captivating displays and activities. Families, adults, and children can experience the mysterious and entertaining aspects of science and technology in a fun and casual environment, through puzzles, hands-on displays, maker activities, and cool experiential demonstrations.

The Festival also has a full schedule of fantastic entertainment in two separate venues, the Main Stage and Family Stage. Enjoy live music and performances for the whole family on the Family Stage. Listen to some of your favorite local bands and hot tribute bands on the Main Stage, along with a scholarship presentation, Marilyn Monroe lookalike contest, artichoke-eating contest and artichoke canasta (harvesting) contest.

The Chicano All Stars Band is an extremely talented, dynamic and energetic all pro-musician band that plays Latin Rock, Rhythm & Blues, Old School and danceable Reggae. Lead vocalist Sam Martinez and lead guitarist and vocalist John Mallare, along with the polished horn section, create a sound that has made it one of the top Latin Rock bands in the area.T his dance band’s music appeals to a wide variety of audiences and will keep everyone dancing ‘til the music stops.

Maroon Vibes
Hailing as Northern California’s Premier Maroon 5 Tribute Band, Maroon Vibes, will grace the ears of Artichoke Festival attendees. Playing a variety of Maroon 5 hits including “This Love”, “She Will Be Loved”, and “Moves Like Jagger”, Maroon Vibes will have you dancing and singing along for their entire set.

Purple Fox and Heebie Jeebies
Purple Fox and the Heebie Jeebies is a Fun, Funky, upbeat Reggae, Rockin’ and Rollin’ Band based in Silicon Valley. Their sophomore album “The Something of Love”, won the Tillywig and the NAPPA Award for 2018, and is currently up for the Grammy nomination for the Best Children’s Album. A celebration of kindness and sharing,the songs bring kids and grownups together, an uplifting, meaningful, dynamic album for an instant Perfect Day. Upbeat Reggae tunes with catchy melodies, nostalgic horns, funky bass and sweet guitar solos.

California’s artichoke history began in 1922 when the first artichoke shoots were planted in Castroville. Today, more than nine decades later, nearly 100 percent of America’s fresh artichoke supply is grown in California and nearly two-thirds is grown in the small town of Castroville.

The first Artichoke Festival was held in 1959 under the sponsorship of the Marinovich Marching Units, with the assistance of the Castroville Rod and Gun Club. In 1961 it was a joint venture of the Marinovich Marching Units and the Castroville Chamber of Commerce to produce a larger festival, and Sally DeSante was chosen as the first Artichoke Queen. In 1963 , 1964, and 1965 it was solely sponsored by the Castroville Chamber of Commerce under the direction of the Artichoke Festival Board with Bill Price, one of the originators of the festival idea.

Advance tickets and discounted ticket packages are available online for the 60th annual festival at artichokefestival.org.

General admission is $15 for those 13 and older; seniors 62 and older and military personnel with ID are $10; children ages 6-12 are $5; general admission for one adult, with wine tasting pass, is $40 (must be 21 years or older); wine tasting alone is $30; and field tours are $10 (daily tour schedules to be announced at the Festival), good for adult or child 5-12. Online purchases are available through 9 a.m. June 2, 2019. No refunds.

Two discounted packages are also available, the Arti-Family Pack and the It’s A Date package. The former is $30, a $10 saving over the regular price. Carmel, CA, April 05, 2019 — Carmel Academy of Performing Arts will hold auditions for the 2019-2020 CAPA Dance Company on May 24 at CAPA in Carmel.

Company auditions will be held from 6:00- 6:30 p.m. for 8 years old and under; 6:30-7:00 p.m. for 9-11 years old; and 7:00-8:00 p.m. for 12 years old and up, Friday, May 24, at CAPA, Mission Street & Eighth Avenue in Carmel.

For more than 25 years, CAPA’s Dance Company has been an award-winning competitive jazz, ballet, tap, contemporary and lyrical team. Competition at CAPA is not the total focus for the team member, yet the inspiration given to the team through outside choreographers, travel, team camaraderie and motivation can be an invaluable tool to the dancer, whether they choose to take a professional route or simply enjoy dance during the school year.

Team Directors Ashley Rutherford and Amanda Casas have created an award-winning team and positive atmosphere for creative and personal growth for each student.

Rutherford began her dancing career at the age of 2 and has competed with Studio West Dance, No Limits Dance and Dance Attack. She performed with Disney artist Linda Arnold as a dancer and vocalist. She was a member of The Dance Company of San Francisco and was a founding member of Starz Dance Company. She started her own dance business at the age of 15, Gotta Dance, and works with children in private schools, after-school programs and preschools.

Casas, who was born in Riverside, California, grew up a competitive dancer from the age of 6. She has won numerous titles, including representing the United States in Australia, winning the international title of “Dancer of The World” in 2006. She toured the world dancing on a cruise ship, was a background dancer for Foreigner, and enjoys print modeling. You may have seen her on the Fox series “So You Think You Can Dance” season 5, making it to Top 30 girls. Casas danced two seasons in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers. She graduated college from California State University Long Beach with a bachelor’s degree in dance, and is Pilates Certified (BASI). She currently teaches conventions and master classes throughout the nation, is a nationally recognized choreographer, and judges internationally, including in Japan, Mexico, and Canada.

Pick up race bibs on Tuesday, May 14 and Friday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Participants are encouraged to come dressed as your favorite vegetable. Otherwise, wear comfortable clothing, taking into account that you will get hot once you begin your run/walk, as well as sunblock, sunglasses, a windbreaker in case the weather changes, and a towel to wipe off the sand. Also, be sure to wear good running/athletic shoes. Participants are encouraged to eat something at least one hour prior to the start of the race. No pets or strollers allowed on the beach.

The Monterey County Fair, celebrating its 83rd year this year, is seeking sponsors for the fair, set for Aug. 29 through Sept. 2, 2019, at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center.

The 82nd Monterey County Fair programs, posters and advertising efforts reached thousands of people, giving the fair’s 2019 sponsors great exposure throughout the year, in the weeks leading up to and during our event. This year’s theme is “High Tides and Carnival Rides.”

Sponsorships range from $5,000 to $300. For the $5,000 level, company logos will be included on the following: Sponsor of the day, Website, Program, Social Media, eNewletter, Poster, Thank-You Ad, Banner Display, Marquee Message, Admission Passes, Parking Passes, and Premier Night Tickets. The next level, $2,500, includes all of the above, except Sponsor of the day and e-Newsletter, and so forth. Other levels are $1,500, $750, $500 and $300.

Attention Monterey County! Show off your talents! Local performers and those who wish to showcase their talents for free are being sought to appear on the Community Stage at the 83rd Annual Monterey County Fair, which will be held Aug. 29-Sept. 2, 2019.

Monterey, CA, April 02, 2019 — Attention Monterey County! Show off your talents! Local performers and those who wish to showcase their talents for free are being sought to appear on the Community Stage at the 83rd Annual Monterey County Fair, which will be held Aug. 29-Sept. 2, 2019.

Are you a dancer, musician, singer, kickboxer, gymnast or other type of performer? Come on out and dazzle Monterey County at the upcoming Monterey County Fair! This year's theme is “High Tides and Carnival Rides.”

Interested individuals and organizations are invited to apply online no later than Friday, June 28, 2019, at www.montereycountyfair.com. There you will find a “Community Act Performance Request Form” to fill out with your pertinent data, type of group, equipment needed, when you would like to perform, etc.

The schedule of performances is determined on a first-come, first-served basis with the deadline for receiving request forms by either fax, email or postal mail no later than June 28. The fair cannot guarantee the times requested, but will make every effort to fill your request.

The Monterey County Fair & Event Center is a premier event center set on 22 oak-studded acres. It is home of the annual Monterey County Fair, host to many major public and private events on the Central Coast, and the site of the Monterey Bay Race Place, a satellite wagering facility.
